A new study reveals that when it comes to breaking up, people would just rather hear it straight. Researchers from Brigham Young University in Utah gave 145 participants different potential ways to get kicked to the curb and found that most people don’t want bad news relayed to them gently or in a roundabout way – they want it directly.
Researcher Alan Manning said, "An immediate 'I'm breaking up with you' might be too direct, but all you need is a 'we need to talk' buffer – just a couple of seconds for the other person to process that bad news is coming.”
