Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a new law Sunday night banning so-called "sanctuary cities" in the state.
The Republican governor went on Facebook Live and signed the law which will now allow police officers to question someone about their immigration status. It also threatens sheriffs with harsh punishment if they don't comply with federal authorities' requests to detain someone for possible deportation. Governor Abbott signed the law despite fierce opposition from Democrats and most police chiefs. He explained that it is necessary to crack down on suspected criminals who are in the U.S. illegally.
