Eddie's uncle was seriously injured after being run over by his own vehicle.
Eddie explained that the accident happened when his uncle spotted what appeared to be a useful tool in the roadway while driving. Thinking he could simply slow down, open the door, and grab it, he leaned out of the vehicle. As he reached for the item, he slipped and fell from the moving car, and the rear wheels ran over him. The accident left Eddie's uncle with a shattered hip and multiple broken ribs. Eddie said nearly every rib was broken and that doctors would need to place metal plates in his chest to help with recovery. Although the injuries were severe, Eddie said his uncle was in good spirits and had even sent a smiling photo from the hospital.
Amy asked whether the injured relative was Eddie's frequently mentioned Uncle Foofa. Eddie clarified that it was a different uncle and noted that he has many uncles in his family. Eddie admitted that he had performed similar maneuvers himself. He explained that if he spotted a useful item, such as a screwdriver, while driving, he would often slow down, unbuckle his seatbelt, and lean out to retrieve it. Eddie said his wife had questioned how someone could fall out of a vehicle while attempting such a stunt. He understood exactly how it could happen because he had done the same thing many times. He added that his father also frequently stopped to collect tools and other items from the roadside.
After hearing the story, Bobby challenged Eddie to deliver a public service announcement warning listeners against doing the same thing. With dramatic music playing in the background, Eddie urged listeners not to stop and attempt to grab items from the road. He warned that the consequences could be severe and pointed to his uncle's accident as an example of what can happen. While Eddie continued emphasizing that no roadside item was worth risking serious injury, he also admitted that he had previously gone even further by pulling over and running through traffic to retrieve objects he considered valuable.
The good news is Eddie's uncle is in recovery and expected to be ok after the accident.
