“Salvation Army Angel Tree Program Begins its 2018 Season”

(Bryan/College Station, TX) – The Christmas Season comes early for The Salvation Army each year; with planning for the Angel Tree program and Red Kettle campaign starting in the hot summer months, and the interviewing and accepting of applications of Angel Tree angels before Halloween. Now, The Salvation Army of Bryan/College Station are asking the community for volunteers for its 2018 season.

The Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program, or Angel Tree program was organized to make the holiday season brighter for less fortunate families in the area by providing them with gifts and toys for their children. The purpose of the program is to give gifts in the name of Christ and assist in strengthening family ties. This program is possible through the generosity of other local families who want to share the spirit of the season. Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army’s highest profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburn, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time.  Last year, The Salvation Army helped 807 families totaling 2033 children with toys and gifts that may not have otherwise received any.

In 2018, The Salvation Army will begin its Angel Tree Program the week of October 8th – 12th from 9:30 am to 3:30pm at its Bryan location with the accepting of applications and interviewing of families from the communities within Brazos County. The program is open to families with children ages 0-12 years old.   Following this stage of the program is the distribution of angels and reception of donated gifts in the Post Oak Mall food court area beginning in mid-November until mid-December from 10 am until 8 pm each day.  Angel Tree culminates with the distribution of all gifts to program enrolled families on December 20th.

The Salvation Army is currently accepting volunteers for each stage of its Angel Tree program.
